[News] Cactus 4.0 Beta 14 Released

Hi,

4.0 beta 14 has just been released.  We were unable this time to check on
any ia64 platform as we had access issues after the recent security
problems at NCSA;  we will test on these platforms as soon as possible.

We expect to release 4.0 beta 15 in June, and a release candidate in July.

Function Aliasing
  - the syntax for function aliasing has been enhanced to allow thorns
    to "require" functions, which guarantees there is a thorn compiled
    in with the function and that a thorn providing it is activated at
    runtime.  The "uses" is still there for optional function usage.

  - the new configuration.ccl has been made more robust.

  - various buffer overruns in HTTPD have been fixed, which should
    make it more secure to use.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN BETA 15
=========================

A lot of the configuration.ccl files will disappear as the explicit
dependencies are removed by the use of function aliasing.

The configuration for extra packages such as HDF5 or PETSc will be
moved into thorns, using the configuration.ccl mechanism.  This should
make it less necessary to recreate a configuration, considerably
reduce recompilation times when the packages are added or removed, and
make the addition of new packages more straightforward.

A new reduction interface will be implemented, to bring reduction into
line with the new interpolation API.  The old reduction API will be
deprecated and removed in a later release.

The old interpolation API, which has been deprecated, will be removed.

The windows port will use the perl from the cygwin distribution instead of
the seperate ActivePerl distribution.
