[Developers] checkpointing MoL variables

Hmm. The log says the author of that patch was a certain tradke... but 
it's quite possible that I wrote it in the first place. From memory it 
should be possible to not checkpoint those variables - the array scratch 
space was not checkpointed when it existed.
